92/365 An Evening with Anushka Shankar

92/365 – An Evening with Anushka Shankar
Tonight I had the good fortune of seeing Anushka Shankar in concert again. DC marked the opening night of a tour featuring her newly released album, Land of Gold. Many of the songs were much darker and almost angry at times compared to her previous work. After a few songs Shankar took the mic and provided context, explaining that Land of Gold came from a place of despair related to the global refugee crisis. She talked about the sadness of seeing innocent children caught in the mix, but about being optimistic and believing that it has to get better. I think the music resonated with audience because it seemed to convey the current sentiment of sadness in of the the world. But the uplifting ragas at the end left me feeling like even in all the darkness, one can still find beauty and hope.
